Meghan Markle Just Wants What Every Mom Wants for Her Family

Meghan Markle’s emotional interview in the documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey was revealing, as she spoke candidly about how she is struggling with life in the spotlight. At the heart of it, her close friend explains, Markle is really just like every other mom in the world — her family’s safety and wellbeing is her priority.

Markle admitted she was naive when she first started dating Prince Harry
During an interview featured in the documentary, Markle shared how her British friends actually warned her about the potential negative tabloid attention when she first started dating Prince Harry. She admits she “naively” didn’t believe it would be a problem.
The duchess explained to ITV News at Ten anchor Tom Bradby that the media attention is “hard.” She went on to explain: “In all fairness I had no idea, which probably sounds difficult to understand here. But when I first met my now-husband, my friends were really happy because I was so happy but my British friends said to me, ‘I’m sure he’s great but you shouldn’t do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life.’”
Markle noted that it was baffling to her, admitting, “And I very naively — I’m American. We don’t have that there — [I said], ‘What are you talking about? That doesn’t make any sense. I’m not in any tabloids.’ I didn’t get it. So it’s been, yeah, it’s been complicated.

Markle had hoped the media “would be fair”
Markle also touched a bit on trying her best to ignore the negativity from the press and the public, sharing that bottling it up could be “damaging.” She explained: “I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a ‘stiff upper lip.’ I really tried, but I think that what that does internally is probably really damaging.”
She continued: “I never thought that this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair. And that’s the part that’s really hard to reconcile.”
The attention over the past year has been a struggle for Markle, who told the interviewer: “Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging. And then when you have a newborn, you know. And especially as a woman, it’s a lot.”
She continued: “So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed. It’s um… yeah. I guess, also thank you for asking because not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”
