Former FBI agent lays out case that Kirstjen Nielsen behind anonymous book
By Caitlin Yilek, November 8, 2019
A former FBI special agent speculated that former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is the author of the scathing book about President Trump written by a senior administration official.
Josh Campbell, now a CNN analyst, said in April that Nielsen’s resignation letter resembled a New York Times op-ed written by the unnamed Trump official, who said that they were part of a “resistance” working to undermine the president’s worst impulses.
Campbell said Thursday that book excerpts published by the Washington Post bolster his argument.
The book excerpts and Nielsen’s past speeches both have sentences that begin with “It is,” use the phrases “those who would” and “all I can tell you,” he said.
Nothing has changed my old prediction…

In tweets from April that appear to have since been deleted, Campbell compared sentences between Nielsen’s resignation letter and the op-ed.“As a trained investigator, I’m just going to go on record now saying that anonymous NYT op-ed was LOADED with commas and em dashes,” Campbell said. “And so is this resignation letter.”
“I might be wrong, but the style and cadence…
“Nielsen: ‘And we have ramped up security measures…’ Anonymous NYT op-ed writer: ‘And we are trying to do what’s right…’
“And don’t even get me started on the use of ‘historic,’ ‘thwart,’ ‘discourse,’ and ‘safer,’” he said.
The same days as Campbell’s tweets, CNN’s Jake Tapper said a senior administration official told him Nielsen believed Trump was “becoming increasingly unhinged about the border crisis and making unreasonable and even impossible requests.”
Nielsen said through a representative last year that she had more important matters to focus on than writing the anonymous opinion piece.
“These types of political attacks are beneath the Secretary and the Department’s mission,” the statement said.
